Visit the Peterborough Museum & Archives on Saturday, November 16 and join citizens of the Métis Nation of Ontario (MNO) Peterborough and District Wapiti Métis Council (PDWMC) to commemorate Louis Riel Day.
This date is the anniversary of Riel's execution in 1885, and although it was a day of great tragedy for Canada, we will be celebrating Métis culture and the continuing progress that Métis people are making in fulfilling Riel's dream of Métis taking their rightful place within Confederation. Riel's success in negotiating Manitoba into Confederation and the protection of minority language rights laid the groundwork for his vision of a Canada that included the Métis Nation and protected Métis rights.
Join MNO PDWMC President Andy Dufrane, Chair Christa Lemelin, and other Councillors from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. for refreshments and conversation in our multipurpose classroom. In addition, Louis Riel's Concertina (accordian-like musical instrument) will be on display for this day only! Visitors will also have an opportunity to view our temporary exhibit, "We Were Taught Differently: The Indian Residential School Experience" on loan from the Lake of the Woods Museum in Kenora, Ontario.
